Antartica is melting

Antartica is melting, according to new data from NASA's Recovery and Climate Experiment (Grace) mission.

The data, which has been captured by satellite, shows that the East Antartic ice sheet (Antartica is divided into east and west) has been losing 57 billion tonnes (GT) of mass since 2006.

According to BBC News, scientists working on the project have been surprised by the findings since they have believed the eastern ice sheet to be relatively stable compared to the smaller western ice sheet, which has been losing 132 GT per year.

The data does not say why this is happening and if it's a result of man, but it's yet another evidence that something major is happening in nature and that it might be wise to act before it is too late.

The full report by Grace can be viewed in the journal Nature Geoscience.
