Buying a green car
We are buying a new car, and we hope to buy one that's environmentally friendly like the Volkswagen EcoFuel. The car runs on biogas (and benzin) and reduces CO2 emissions by 23 per cent. So, are there any incentives to buying a 'green' car? Sadly, the Swedish government is doing little to encourage our purchase. We were hoping for a cash incentive and maybe even free parking, but NO. All you get is some small reduction when it comes to the road tax, cheaper fuel and, of course, a better concious. I guess I should be happy about that, but then I read in today's Dagens Nyheter that you can expect to live seven months shorter in Stockholm thanks to the city's high pollution levels. Isn't it about time to re-think the city's transporation policy and give incentives to private car owners who want to make a little contribution to the world?
Update: I sent an email to a representative of Stockholm Stad and he told me that the reason why the government has stopped giving incentives to people buying environmentally friendly cars (i.e. free parking, no congestion charge and a SEK 10.000 cash return) is because a study shows that such incentives have little effect after sales have reach a certain percentage (sales of eco cars have surpassed 40 per cent in Sweden). Instead, the governmnet has decided to give incentives to people who want to buy electric cars...
